Smoking cigarettes is a habit that can lead to many health consequences over the years. Anytime you inhale tobacco you increase your chance for certain diseases which could impact the well being of your own life or your families. The negative effects of cigarette smoking begin with a person becoming addicted to them. The addiction leads to the person feeling as if they need nicotine more frequently. Withdrawal occurs because your body and brain are so used to the nicotine and cigarette smoking. Withdrawal symptoms can affect every individual differently with an array of symptoms. Some symptoms may include headaches, fatigue, anxiety, nervousness, and inability to concentrate. It is important to be aware of the negative effects of cigarette smoking so you can quit as early as possible and save yourself from the many harms of cigarette smoking.
The negative effects of cigarette smoking begin with the very first inhale of a cigarette. When you fill your lungs with smoke, there is a decreased amount of oxygen and increased amount of carbon monoxide. Besides the carbon monoxide, people are inhaling smoke, tar and nicotine which can cause damage to the throat, airways and lungs. These substances that are inhaled can affect the nervous system and cause nervousness, trembling hands and decreased appetite. Furthermore, nursing or pregnant woman should never smoke cigarettes as they are known to lead to increased risk for birth defects.
Cigarette smoking can also lead to increased risks of cardiac events and other health conditions. Firstly, the lungs are directly impacted every time someone smokes a cigarette. Negative effects of cigarette smoking in the lungs can cause three diseases which can eventually lead to death if left uncontrolled. These diseases are chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), emphysema and lung cancer. Anyone who smokes cigarettes for long periods of times have increased risk of these diseases. Furthermore, the heart can be negatively impacted by cigarette smoking. People who smoke cigarettes are at an increased risk for high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks, high cholesterol and coronary artery disease.
It has always been my question as to how cigarettes are legal when they impact the health of individuals so negatively. However, it is important to improve your health regardless if you smoke cigarettes or not. Exercise and a well balanced diet of variety of food are the two most important ways to remain healthy.
